This paper is focused on available evidences about the Lombards’ seats of power, including the indications of the pre-Italian settlements and their building typology. The reference to the royal venues is accompanied by attention to those of the dukes and ‘gastaldi’ (stewards) who represented the central power in the territory. The surviving archaeological records and the literary and artistic sources have allowed us to point out aspects that have not been taken into consideration as a whole and in the relationship with the most signifi cant symbols of power, verifying the level of progressive integration of the Lombards into the Mediterranean context
