This paper sketches out how contemporary accounts in dance dramaturgy, such as the work of Maaike Bleeker, André Lepecki, Bojana Bauer and Bojana Kunst evoke the diagrammatic, either as a practice or as a metaphor. I argue that the diagrammatic can function as a constructive framework that can address the (sometimes) problematic presence of the dance dramaturg and move beyond an understanding of the dramaturg’s role as someone that always exists between theory and practice. I draw on the work of Sybille Krämer, Valeria Giardino, Elizabeth de Freitas and Nathalie Sinclair to present the epistemological and embodied qualities of the diagrammatic and indicate points of convergence with dramaturgical practices. Contemporary dramaturgical practices propose an alternative mode of thinking that requires a process of becoming aware, of mapping and of being implicated in the complex networks of actions, agents and materials that emerge during the creative process. Through the filter of the diagrammatic, dramaturgical practice and its epistemological implications are discussed in connection to the use of language, conceptual knowledge and the role of embodiment
