Rural tourism destinations play a vital role in promoting urban–rural integration in international metropolises, and understanding their spatial evolution is crucial for sustainable urban development. Taking Shanghai as a case study, this paper employs ArcGIS spatial analysis and the Geodetector model to analyse the spatial distribution characteristics and driving factors of rural tourism destinations from 1993 to 2023. The results indicate that the spatial pattern has evolved from a single-core agglomeration to a multi-core structure, with the centre of distribution shifting northeastward. Agricultural experiential rural tourism sites exhibit strong clustering, whereas agricultural science and technology types display random distribution. Key influencing factors include topography, economic development, transportation accessibility, and policy guidance have been concerned, with dominant drivers shifting from urbanisation rate (1993–2003) to hotel density (2003–2013) and primary industry value (2013–2023). The interaction index between the primary industry and the distance from highways exhibited the strongest influence
