Streets are assuming an increasingly pivotal role in urban tourism activities; however, the impact of urban street on tourist restoration remains underexplored. Based on attention restoration theory and stress reduction theory, a field-based quasi-experimental design with a 3 (street type: historical vs. commercial vs. park) x 2 (tour mode: virtual vs. physical) factorial structure was conducted to evaluate the restorative potential of urban street tour experiences, incorporating both physiological and psychological data. The following conclusions are drawn. First, historical streets are more effective in providing physiological-psychological recovery benefits than commercial and park streets, with heightened arousal and reduced stress as primary indicators. Second, physical tours of urban streets provide greater physiological-psychological recovery benefits than virtual tours, evidenced by increased arousal, pleasure, perceived recovery and decreased stress levels. Third, a significant interaction effect between tour modes and street types influences tourists’ psychological restoration, manifesting in pleasure, arousal and stress. These research findings not only contribute novel theoretical insights into the restorative potential of urban streets within the tourism context but also provide practical implications for designing restorative urban environments in the digital era
