Residents’ pro-environmental behaviour in the tourism destination

A systematic literature review and future research agenda

Tourism destinations inevitably face significant environmental challenges such as excessive resource use and environmental degradation, which makes residents’ pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) a practical approach and essential strategy for achieving long-term sustainability. This paper presents the first systematic literature review specifically focused on the residents’ PEBs in the context of tourism destinations. A total of 49 relevant journal articles collected from the Web of Science and Scopus were selected to be analyzed. The findings offer insights into the research progress of residents’ PEBs across essential areas, such as theoretical frameworks, research design, influencing factors, and resulting outcomes. These insights not only help to identify current research gaps but also offer recommendations for future exploration. Additionally, this review also provides practical contributions by proposing suggestions for destination managers to cultivate residents’ PEBs and advance sustainable tourism development in tourist destinations
