Understanding the impacts of climate extremes on the tourism economy is a theoretical prerequisite for improving the climate adaptability of tourism. We utilised multi-source panel data from China to investigate the effects and pathways of various climate extremes on the tourism economy and to explore their heterogeneity. The evidence suggests that climate extremes significantly inhibit tourism economic growth by shaping travel decisions. Specifically, extreme temperatures reduce tourist arrivals, and extreme droughts affect individual spending, but extreme rainfalls have limited impacts. While key tourism cities demonstrate stronger resilience, temporal analysis reveals that the impacts of climate extremes have intensified, highlighting the urgency of adopting adaptive policies
