Women’s vulnerability is often linked to weak solidarity within a group. On Kelapa Dua Island, Seribu Islands Regency, Jakarta, also known as Kampung Bugis, there is a group of women of Bugis descent struggling to meet their daily needs amidst the uncertain income of their husbands, the majority of whom are former fishermen. Uncertainty about going to sea has driven husbands to change professions, and in the process, the women struggle to support their families’ finances by selling products and services. One alternative livelihood pursued by the people of Kelapa Dua Island is ecotourism, given the island’s famed marine beauty. Despite limited access, these women in the northern tip of Jakarta Province struggle to find a place in this male-dominated industry
