In the present text, we analyze the expansion movement of coffee plantations in the Southwest of Minas Gerais – municipalities of Guaxupé, Guaranésia, and Muzambinho – between the years 1868 and 1920. Drawing on a diverse set of sources – internal records of farms, deeds of establishment of plantations, post-mortem inventories, and reports from the Mogyana Railway Company – we seek to describe the assembly process of regional coffee production. Initially, we analyze the first surge of expansion of coffee plantations in the area between the final decades of the Empire and the early years of the 20th century. Subsequently, we discuss the impacts of the arrival of the railway on the regional economy and the consolidation of the region as an important coffee center
