A nineteenth century cantata inspired by the ancient Greek mythology of the Pleiades (Πλήίάδες) is analysed for the first time. While it was very much an expression of the Victorian culture of the United States, it also served as a vehicle to promote the Central Star hypothesis of the German astronomer Johann Heinrich von Maedler
