This article argues that for some young women black cultural forms and the means through which these forms are interpreted have come to symbolise a wider 'black community' going beyond physical or geographical boundaries. Taken from conversations held with groups of young African Caribbean women in 1995, the paper discusses the nature of this at times one-dimensional 'community'. Through highlighting the processes of exclusion/inclusion involved in the way young black women understand 'community', it is suggested that a definition of black identity should place black women at the centre rather than at the margins of issues about black experiences.
