In this roundtable discussion, four artists – each with multiple practices as performers, writers, directors, dramaturgs, teachers, scholars, and campaigners – discuss their experiences and views of the relationship between casting and identity, from the perspective of both art and activism. Nicole Acquah, Emma Jude Harris, Kerry Kyriacos, and Samia La Virgne bring their own questions for discussion: they explore discrimination and misrepresentation, what constitutes representation, and how casting interacts with dramaturgy and consultation. They share and imagine co-creative interventions in training, production, research and development, and sector policy, as they ask: ‘where is the future of casting going and where would we like it to go?’ (Acquah)
