The Scopes “monkey trial” was not a clash between science and religion, but rather a courtroom microcosm symbolizing a larger global cultural struggle between conservative Christianity and progressive evolutionary eugenics. At the time of the Scopes trial, eugenics was ubiquitous, and economically struggling Christians in the “Bible Belt” were under the imminent threat of eugenic sterilization. While many leading conservative Christians had no issues with evolution as an overarching scientific theory, by 1925, the mainstream interpretation of Darwin’s theory had been hijacked by social progressives who sought to actively direct “the survival of the fittest” through eugenic reforms
