In June 1823, José Joaquín de Mora’s first text in English from exile, entitled ‘Appeal to the People of Great Britain’, appeared in the London journal The Republican . In this piece, the Gaditan writer condemned the inaction of the British Government and urged the English to defend the political and economic principles shared by Spain and England. This article analyses the text, while examining the relationship between the publication’s editor, Richard Carlile, and the Spanish liberal cause. This paper, on the one hand, provides a complete reading of the ideological implications that Mora’s writings acquired from the onset of his emigration. On the other, it brings us to the precise moment of his departure to England. Ultimately, this investigation places the ‘Appeal’ among Mora’s texts in English, along with those of The European Review
