This article examines the place of the urban chronicle in the complex processes of literary canon formation in Chile. These processes have proved sensitive to political, aesthetic, social and economic factors at both local and global levels. I argue that the recognition and support of Chilean critics, publishing houses and scholars is essential for writers to become canonized in the country. An analysis of the resistance, acceptance and eventual canonical recognition of the work of Chilean writer Pedro Lemebel concludes that the genre of the urban chronicle has gradually entered the canon through different streams; first anti-canonical, then conventionally canonical. This has happened in spite of the ongoing predominance of the genres of narrative, poetry and drama in the Chilean literary establishment
