Acharnians 4–6 alludes to an early diplomatic activity on the part of Prodicus that involved the islanders, Cleon, and accusations of bribe taking. The allusion is cleverly imbedded in a comedic parody of a verbal distinction known to have been made by Prodicus. The Sophist was famous for drawing fine distinctions between the meanings of near synonyms, a unique wisdom that he showcased in the many epideictic speeches that he delivered in Athens. As a well-known public intellectual, he was thus a favourite target of Aristophanes, whom we suggest Aristophanes is parodying here
