Cities are vital for economic and sustainable development. However, they face challenges such as rapid urban growth, socio-economic inequalities, and resource scarcity in developing countries. Smart cities emerge as solutions, but they also present social risks. This article reviews the literature on these risks, aiming to broaden the understanding of the social challenges faced by the cities of the future and outline a research agenda. It is concluded that planning and executing smart city projects considering technological and social aspects is essential to ensure inclusive and engaged cities. At the same time, assessing social risks and implementing proactive measures is crucial to equitably distribute technological benefits, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals and urban quality of life
