The authors of this article are both sociologists working just 10 miles from Harrisonburg, Virginia—the scene of the Ivan Teleguz case—which involved a host of topical issues, from fears of organized Russian criminal activity in the United States to American xenophobia about migrant-perpetrated violence. The authors dove into a qualitative analysis of all relevant trial transcripts and court filings, certain that they would find Teleguz cast as the villain of this courtroom drama.
