L'A. centre son analyse sur la construction sociale, le conditionnement historique et la mediation culturelle de l'identite des Banjar cotiers du Kalimantan meridional (Borneo, Indonesie). Elle soutient que la categorie de Malais cotier, meme si elle a une certaine pertinence historique et culturelle, n'est pas utile pour comprendre ce que veut dire un Malais cotier lorsqu'il s'identifie en tant que (1) Banjar, et (2) en tant que Banjar kuala (Banjar cotier) a l'interieur de ce groupe, denominations, entre autres, utilisees par les habitants du Kalimantan meridional. Examinant divers aspects de la caracterisation identitaire des Banjar (la langue, les divisions territoriales, la religion, la relation avec l'Etat indonesien), elle suggere que l'identite banjar se construit par un processus complexe d'interactions et de pratiques se referant a l'islam, mais aussi au systeme local des rangs, qui est lui-meme une interpretation du discours de l'Etat sur la religion et l'ethnicite
