Koentjaraningrat-was a remarkable man. Those of us who are gathered here today-and those who may at some future time read these words-will remember him in different ways. Those most fortunate will remember him intimately as husband, father, or possibly as grandfather.Others of us will remember him as a teacher and mentor and as an intellectual figure of exceptional wisdom and learning.'Pak Koen', as he was known to many, was an academic, an artist, and the Indonesian founder of anthropology in Indonesia. My task in this lecture 1 will be to focus on his academic achievements and his institutional legacy.I cannot, however, commence this task nor detach my current considerations from my own personal involvement with Pak Koen
