This article considers Mark Region’s 2009 film After Last Season as a work whose reputation as a critical and commercial failure masks the innovative approach to film form that its amateur director achieved with the film. After Last Season is a distinct type of failed film that seems entirely divorced from classical cinema techniques and conventions. The alienation that results from Region’s creative choices prevents the film from enjoying success on the repertory circuit. Though the film is also not available through any official distribution channel, it continues to receive some attention online through commentary videos and occasional articles about its supposed badness. Within this context of failure, I argue for the artistic merits of After Last Season, a film in many ways about the conception of images, and a fascinating case of indexicality in cinema.cult film, After Last Season, incompetence, indexicality, Red Letter Media
