Indigenous communities in western Nicaragua struggle to cope with the effects of loss of land, language, and cultural features. Yet several places retain a sense of indigenous ancestry with varying degrees and forms of expression. In the community of Monimbó, contemporary social organizing represents a continuation of centuries-long efforts to maintain control over development practices through opposition to external influence and expression of local values. These localized actions can be interpreted as a struggle to maintain a sense of place among an indigenous people. The concept of place is vital for establishing who people are, where they come from, and what they value. This article seeks to understand how place-based historical acts of resistance and current organizing efforts ensure that local spaces continue to be imbued with unique meaning for the people of Monimbó
