The history of coffee consumption in early modern India (1550-1800) has not previously been subject to serious scholarly attention. This article investigates the introduction and diffusion of coffee drinking in India to argue that coffee had a more pervasive presence than previously thought. Using sources like memoirs, chronicles, travelogues, lexicons and medical texts, the paper studies the various meanings attached to the drink and the diverse contexts of its consumption.
