Traditionally cultural consumption patterns have reflected a marked hegemony of the United States over Latin America through the massive consumption of Hollywood productions. This dynamic was reproduced with advances in television technology. In the last decade, the Internet development allowed for the expansion of global online consumption of audiovisual content through U.S. digital platforms that have dominated global and Latin American audiences. These corporations’ business model has gone from mere exhibition to increasingly include production. At the same time, they have started to view Latin America not just as a consumer, but as the scenario for the production of series and films on regional and national topics specifically tailored for the Latin American audience. This scenario has opened a whole new dimension within the field of regional cultural relations. Understanding how it works is key to interpret a new expression of cultural colonization drawing on the technological imbalance in the United States-Latin America relations
