Many groups and communities in South Asia have a long-standing migration history yet do not readily accept the term ‘diaspora’ due to many political concerns. Amongst these groups, the Nepali in India stands out as a case. The long-term adjustment outcomes, acculturation processes, and identity construction have been a pressing concern for the Nepali settled in Darjeeling Hills, who have periodically tried to re-territorialize their present location to secure their identities as citizens. Drawing on ethnographic insights, this paper highlights the reconstitution of identity ties and renegotiation of ethnic boundaries in an atmosphere surcharged with varied political overtones. While noting the significance of such struggles, the paper shows how the perpetual stirring of ethno-boundaries through adaptation, dislocations, and identification have reconstituted affective ties and signaled a move from uncertainty to a certitude of being and belonging to the region
