This article reframes the genealogy of the modern ‘white cube’ gallery—widely associated with New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)—by repositioning the loan exhibition as a conceptual engine of transatlantic museum design. It challenges linear narratives that trace MoMA’s aesthetic to European modernism, arguing instead that the white cube distilled earlier principles institutionalised at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), where the South Court was purpose-built for rotating loan exhibitions in the 1860s. By tracing the evolution of loan exhibitions across the V&A, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and MoMA, the article shows how temporary display shaped architectural form, curatorial experimentation, and institutional identity. Though often viewed as oppositional, the V&A’s immersive ornament and MoMA’s spatial restraint are shown to pursue similar aims: coherence, circulation, and public access. This transnational perspective contributes to wider debates in museum history, exhibition design, and the politics of display
