In this article, several Māori professionals and scholars working across museums, libraries and archives discuss historical legacies, current developments and future visions. Takerei Norton reports on recent developments with the remarkable tribal-run Ngāi Tahu Archive which is instrumental in the documenting, reclaiming and dissemination of knowledge about the tribe’s past, described as a ‘treasure house for future generations’. Paul Diamond at the Alexander Turnbull Library reflects on his work caring for an extraordinary national corpus of Māori manuscripts, photographs and documentary heritage and the challenge of reconnecting these resources with descendants through various pathways. Hirini Paratene reveals the thinking behind the extraordinary national geo-spatial website that is Māori Maps, arguing that it is an ‘archive of intellectual belonging’. Lastly, curator and archaeologist at Otago Museum Gerard O’Regan writes about his research on Māori rock art, describing it as a ‘dispersed archive’ whose imagery has found its way into popular culture
