This article aims to address the specific nature of the literary criticism developed by Georg Lukcs. Literature was always a privileged object throughout his intellectual career. However, there are considerable differences in the way he approaches it, which respond largely to political and historical injunctions. We begin with more general considerations about Lukcs' relationship with literature, in which the problem arises of the role of history as literary history and as a reconciliation between artistic needs and those of the historical development. We then present some aspects of Lukcs' "communist aesthetics" in more detail. At this point, this article will focus on the controversy against the vulgar sociologism, which marked the development of Soviet aesthetic thought and played a fundamental role in the constitution of Lukcs' own literary criticism. Some traces of the way Lukcs positions himself as a historian and literary critic appear clearly in his intervention in the debate on the novel, one of the episodes in the confrontation with vulgar sociologism, which will be commented on at the end
