Koushut Khan (1823–1878) has not received proper coverage in the scientific literature. This work addresses situation and restores the image of this extraordinary personality. The study uses historical and comparative analysis to study historiographical and ethnographic material. Using this method made it possible to identify new details about the life of Koushut Khan, and helped give an objective look at the socio-political situation in the Merv region. The results reconstruct the image of Koushut Khan as a commander, a diplomat, and a leader. His foresight and patience helped him win a number of victories and gain fame as a military leader. Koushut Khan, as a businessman, organized the construction of the impressive fortress of Koushut KhanGala, and erected the Koushut Bend dam. He founded a network of maktabs and madras in Merv
