The article covers historical development of exclamatory sentences in the Early New German period. As the theoretical basis we used studies of H. Altmann, F. D ́Avis, W.G. Admoni and other prominent scientists. Works by Hans Sachs «Der farendt Schuler im Paradeiß», «Das heiß Eysen», «Das narren-schneyden», «Der doctor mit der grosen nasen» and «Der böß Rauch» were chosen as material for the analysis. As a result of the study we were able to mark various syntactical types of exclamatory sentences, the most frequent type appeared to be sentences beginning with «wie»-adverb. It was also noted, that due to some semantical characteristics it might be possible to define a certain common pragmatic purpose, which would be an additional tool to distinguish exclamatories from other types of sentences. Exclamatory structures, found in Hans Sachs’ texts, are specific of characters’ oral speech and create vision of spontaneous spoken language. In some cases exclamations contain forms of address, which are used as a kind of link between remarks of the characters and make the narration lively and natural
