The article is devoted to little-known pages of the events of the armed conflict on the Khalkh River (Khalkhin Gol) in 1939. A description of the state of domestic and foreign historiography is given, an analysis of documents from the collections of the Russian State Military Archive (hereinafter – RSMA) is carried out. Based on the analysis of archival documents, the main directions, stages and results of military-political cooperation between the USSR and the Mongolian People’s Republic at the Khalkhin Gol in 1939 have been reconstructed. The following methods were used in the course of the study: source study, historical-comparative, problemchronological, which allowed the most complete coverage of the material and technical state of the Soviet- Mongolian and Japanese-Manchurian troops, the balance of forces on both sides on the eve of the events at the Khalkhin Gol in 1939, operational and intelligence reports of the theater of military operations, data on the number of casualties among personnel and prisoners of war of the opposing sides, the use of new tactics and strategy during the military operations at the Khalkhin Gol, the dissemination and counteraction of propaganda material. It is concluded that these documents have not been studied in full, many were classified and require a more thorough source analysis, selection and introduction into circulation of new, previously unstudied sources and documents in establishing an objective picture, the historical truth of the the Khalkhin Gol events and countering attempts of history falsification
