[Chapter XIX. Types and syndromes] Chapter XIX is one of the closing chapters of The Authoritarian Personality . Here, Theodor W. Adorno summarizes the results that emerged from the analysis of the interviews with the people who received the highest and lowest scores on the so-called F-scale and thus exhibit the most or least of the prejudices and authoritarian attitudes that the scale measures. Adorno then further groups the two groups of high scorers and low scorers into a typology with a larger number of subgroups. The groups are defined as psychological syndromes according to the theory inspired by Freudian psychoanalysis that guides the entire investigation. The group with the highest score is divided into the surface resentment, the conventional, the authoritarian, the rebel or psychopath, the crank and the manipulative syndrome. The group with the lowest score is divided into the rigid, the protesting, the impulsive, the easy-going and the genuine liberal. The chapter opens with a critical discussion of the concept of typology as it was used at the time of the study in conventional – and in Nazi – psychology, where Adorno outlines his own approach.
