This article reflects on the artistic trajectory of Rafael Pagatini (Caxias do Sul, RS, Brazil, 1985), with particular attention to the relationship between his work and the construction of memory. The analysis focuses on a series of works in which the artist offers a critical perspective on the memory of Brazil’s civil-military dictatorship (1964–1985). Given the scope of the text, closer attention is paid to pieces that appropriate newspaper advertisements and photographic images from various archives connected to the historical period. This selection is justified by the fact that these works address the symbolic violence of the years of exceptional rule, both through the support of civilian sectors for the authoritarian government and through the discursive strategies developed by the regime itself to sustain its control over civil society
