The objective of the present work is to present an overview of studies on rhotic variation in the southern states of Brazil -giving greater emphasis to investigations on variation in syllabic coda in Rio Grande do Sul -and to suggest new courses of research. To this end, the investigation is guided by the results of the analyzed literature (articles, dissertations and theses) and points to the need to integrate the concept of linguistic groupings (Razky & Guedes 2015) and phonetic groupings (Razky, Telles & Coimbra 2019) to the studies. That is, it is necessary to revisit the diatopic dynamics of the variable 'r'.The initial analysis for this investigation suggests that it would be possible to distinguish phonetic groupings that correspond to areas of European colonization, monolingual border areas and internal monolingual areas.Evidence also indicates that there would be microclusters, at least in the areas of European colonization
