Un paso hacia la igualdad democrática

El sufragio universal es un principio fundamental de las democracias modernas. El voto permite que las personas expresen sus preferencias sobre quién debe gobernar y qué políticas públicas deben implementarse. Votar refuerza el sentido de pertenencia a una comunidad política y es uno de los principales derechos políticos de ciudadanía. Sin embargo, la exclusión de los niños del derecho al voto sigue siendo una norma ampliamente aceptada sin un cuestionamiento profundo. La restricción basada en la edad se ha justificado tradicionalmente por supuestos déficits de madurez, inadecuada capacidad cognitiva y falta de conocimiento político de los menores. No obstante, la presente reflexión filosófica, apoyada en estudios neurocientíficos recientes, sugiere que estos argumentos son arbitrarios y carecen de un fundamento empírico sólido. Este artículo argumenta que el derecho al voto es un derecho de ciudadanía que debe ser otorgado a cualquier ser humano que lo reclame, sin importar su edad, género, etnia o cualquier otra categoría de exclusión identitaria
