Bernburg is a small town in what is a more rural region, a two-hour car drive south of Berlin. It is part of the Anhaltinian component of what today is the German federated state of Saxony-Anhalt. Up until 1947, Anhalt was an autonomous state within the German Reich. Originally, it consisted of several small duchies, one of which was Bernburg.
