This article examines the representation of mermaids in fanfiction and how these stories challenge cis-heteronormative conventions, particularly in the context of queer friendships and chosen families. Mermaid fanfiction offers a unique lens through which to explore contemporary understandings of interpersonal relationships, gender and sexuality. The analysis focuses on three case studies that showcase how these narratives rewrite traditional storytelling conventions, reimagine interpersonal relationships and explore the transformative power of friendship and chosen family. By engaging with friendship theory and intersectionality, the article highlights the ways in which mermaid fanfiction contributes to broader cultural dialogues around identity, connection and belonging in the digital age
