“Things to Make for the Home in a Ghost City” is situated writing, a silent, resistant spatial practice in the conflictual space of the coastal enclave of Varosha, Famagusta, Cyprus. It comprises an introduction and two sections of “Notes from the Front” that fuse various genres of writing: DIY manuals; United Nations protocols about the Cyprus Cease-Fire Zone; and Varosha, personal diaries of spatial narratives of war and peace-building memories. The “Notes from the Front” bring forward the interrelationship between divergent collective imaginaries and the performativity of crossing the borders into Varosha, both physically and fictionally. They make visible the entanglement of material agents of the city with the collective imaginaries of Varosha as a three-faceted city: the Ghost City, inaccessible homeland for nearly 50 years; the Colonized City by the dark tourist infrastructure; and the Reclaimed City thanks to the “Architectural Support Manual for Re-inhabiting Varosha.”
