Why did Nicolas Poussin refrain from writing a treatise on painting? His methodical practice and philosophical discipline suggest a mind attuned to system and order, yet Poussin’s art resists the stasis such a text would demand. His works reveal continual negotiation between reason and emotion, structure and spontaneity, philosophical narrative, and sensual and poetic vitality. These tensions render a singular treatise impossible, defining Poussin not as a doctrinaire but as an artist whose artistic philosophy could only be realized in the mutable language of painting itself
