Globally the COVID-19 pandemic has destabilised health systems and communities. \nGovernments in low- and middle-income \ncountries (LMICs) followed the approaches \nadopted by the Global North and advocated \nby international bodies such as the WHO, \nand instituted varying degrees of nationwide \nstay at home orders (lockdowns) from strict \nrestrictions (such as in South Africa, India \nand Zimbabwe) to weakly enforced lockdown as in Brazil.1 \n Many have questioned \nthe appropriateness of these measures in \nLMIC contexts2 \n where key preventive behaviours such as social distancing and frequent \nhand washing are impossible to implement \nin densely populated informal housing settlements
