The article explores the narrative dimension of cartographic cartouches, which, through the visual compositions within, convey stories beyond geographical data. As methodology, the article applies a literary studies theory to two cartouches from two 18th-century maps: Bawr’s map of Moldova and Seutter’s map of Japan. These cartouches, rich in characters, symbols, and allegories, are analysed through concepts from narrative theory. This approach is grounded in the growing field that examines maps as cultural and communicative objects, drawing on frameworks such as cartographic text, map discourse, and the concept of the para-map – akin to a paratext – which incorporates marginal features external to the main cartographic body. The study employs concepts from narratology and literary theory – such as event, action, narrator, character, narrative time, anachronism, and spatial disruption –, demonstrating their value in interpreting the storytelling function of cartouches. A key conclusion is that by merging narrative and visual expression, maps blur the boundary between “telling” and “showing”, creating a persuasive effect. This fusion enhances the map’s communicative power and highlights its role not only as a geographic document but also as a narrative artefact that invites interpretation and emotional engagement
