The controversy centring on the distinction between the concepts of caste and subcaste is one indication of the difficulty in understanding the structure of the caste system. The relevant studies fail to clarify the issue because of inadequate theoretical models and the lack of suitable tests. In this paper, a different theoretical model is put forward, and some of the hypotheses derived from this model are empirically tested. In the process, the distinction between caste and subcaste is shown to have empirical referents. However, the empirical reality is of so fluid and tentative a nature that it cannot easily be grasped with the usual conceptual apparatus. To remedy this handicap, the application of some ideas from set theory is suggested, with illustrations
