This article examines the confrontations that take place between the female and male devisants of the Nouvelles 12 and 42 of the Heptaméron. While these exchanges frequently deviate from the explicit topic of the tales, they consistently circle back to the implicit features of the narration – most strikingly, to the manner in which the storytellers conceive and present the notion of female honour. By elevating this notion into a contested object of debate, the exchanges between the devisants reveal the various biases shaping the narrations and suggest that the truth-value of the tales—on which the devisants so adamantly and so repeatedly insist—is anything but absolute
