Nearly thirty years ago Cooley published a study of the acquisition of self-words by a child. This paper is a report of an attempted repetition of that study. In general the conclusions are the same: The child learns to know others before he knows himself as a self; he "understands" words in sentences before he can speak them; there is a little pronominal confusion; and the child masters the self and other words sometime before he is two and a half or three years old. A vocabulary count at the age of fourteen months gave 21 spoken words; at two years there were 645 words
