Hlne Cixous's concept of "criture fminine" ("women's writing") refers to a feminist style of writing that gives voice to suppressed and silenced female perspectives and highlights the ambiguity and complexity of female experiences. The fairy tale "Snow White" revolves around the title female character, victimized by her stepmother and then rescued by the prince, with whom it is told that she lives happily ever after. As a postmodern short story, Neil Gaiman's "Snow, Glass, Apples" (1994) retells this widely-known fairy tale from the perspective of Snow White's stepmother, who struggles to maintain her power and authority over the kingdom and to protect it from the threat imposed by Snow White. The shift in the narrative voice presents an effective approach to the concepts of good and evil and their gendered characterisation in patriarchal texts. It subverts the gendered roles to which female characters are restricted in classical fairy tales. Thus, it provides a rich ground for revisiting the classical fairy tale "Snow White" through feminist thinking. Therefore, the paper employs Hlne Cixous's feminist theory, particularly her concept of "criture feminine," to discuss the ambiguity of female identity which is hard to stereotypically labelled as absolutely good or evil. Thus, the paper intends to indicate how the new portrayal of the stepmother's agency in Gaiman's story exemplifies the case of women within the ambiguity of ethical norms through Hlne Cixous's consideration of a fluid and dynamic female identity
