It is only in a restricted area that modern advances in psychiatry possess interest for the sociologist. This restricted are covers studies of psychoneurosis and what is known as personal maladjustment; these ills are essentially social and socially conditioned. Freud's studies lead directly to the conclusion that society is implicated: to some extent psychiatry has become an intimate sociology.
