Apsara Engine, Bishakh Som’s new collection of short comics was published in April 2020 from The Feminist Press. Her graphic memoir, Spellbound, will be published by Street Noise Books in the autumn of 2020. This interview, undertaken throughout May and June of 2020, features discussion of the possibilities of comics to tell new stories in new ways, particularly in relation to works created by queer, and specifically trans artists; possibilities for new genres, concerns, approaches to the form, and voices, especially more queer and trans POC creators; comics as visual poetry; the roles and functions of art in society; expressing ideas and provoking new ways of seeing and feeling; and bringing into art a focus on issues and topics with contemporary resonance
