This article addresses transformations in the practices of the popular food trade stemming from the construction of the Market Square of Bragança, which took place between 1877 and 1887. Based on scientific and liberal perspectives, these projects were committed to enhancing forms of social interaction as well as advancing legal structuring actions that were still underdeveloped in the country, as exemplified by the French decimal metric system. Using theoretical and methodological contributions from Cultural History, we analyze sources related to the aforementioned building, articulated within broader contexts. By establishing new standards for activities, the markets fostered processes of educating sensibilities amid the rise of capitalist modernity concepts in urban spaces
