This article focuses on the readings and appropriations of history made by Antônio Luiz de Brito Aragão e Vasconcelos in his general defense of the defendants for the crime of lèse-majesty, resulting from their involvement in the Revolution of 1817, seeking to show how these appropriations were essential to him in his action as a lawyer. Defenses of two specific defendants also are analyzed, which the aforementioned defender made in partnership with other lawyers, namely: with Manoel Gonçalves da Rocha, concerning Manuel Florentino Carneiro da Cunha, and with Luís de França de Ataíde e Mojedro, concerning José Maria de Vasconcelos and Bourbon. In this analysis, special attention is devoted to the following thinkers of the Enlightenment: Baron de Montesquieu, Cesare Beccaria and Pascoal de Melo Freire
