The article recovers the concepts used to think about the history of the Brazilian documentary, with an emphasis on the silent period and its institutionalization, represented by the production of films by the National Institute of Educational Cinema from 1936 onwards. This return establishes a historical path at the same time as suggesting connections with other cultural production areas of the period, such as photography, as well as drawing the reader's attention to moments and films that require further research
