Missionaries represent a subculture within Western culture. They stress theology and the moral taboos more than do their fellow-countrymen. According to the prejudices of their sects, missions combat nakedness, manners, and the mores concerning marriage, health, property, and what they accomplish is characteristically a compromise between Western and indigenous ways. In some cases easily assimilable, the new traits may weaken the family and the prestige of the chief, destroy social classes and create new ones, and usurp the native arts
